My costume, Rising from the Ashes, is based on the phoenix, which has been a symbol of strength, change, and starting over throughout history. To me, the phoenix also represents my journey as a boy in Irish dance and how much confidence performing has given me.
The costume shows a phoenix rising from dark ashes. Black represents the ashes and the challenges we sometimes have to overcome. Red and orange represent fire, energy, courage, and determination. Gold represents the light and strength of the phoenix as it rises. Together, the colors show the phoenix changing from ashes, to fire, and finally becoming something stronger. I added red, black, and gold Swarovski crystals to give the costume sparkle and make the fiery details stand out when I dance.
I wanted the costume to have historical elements because I have always enjoyed history. The back is inspired by a corset, and the hussar-style vest includes braiding and detailed frogging. These details give the costume structure and connect it to historical clothing while still making it feel modern.
Sometimes being a boy in dance makes me feel like I stand out, but Irish dance has taught me that standing out can be a strength. Dance gives me a way to express my individuality, celebrate my Irish heritage, and feel confident onstage. My parents have encouraged my ideas and helped bring this design to life.
This costume is my interpretation of a phoenix: powerful, creative, and always rising.
