Everybody is really tight-knit in Australia, though I have heard from people who have competed in America who said that there is a lot more rivalry and competition between competitors- one of those people nearly got pushed off the stage because her competitor was so pushy and aggressive.
At least in this part of America everyone is very friendly at feis, however I think anywhere there is always the possibility that someone won't be having the best of days and you will be in the middle of it.

My mum used to be a World Class Ice/Roller Skater and later she became a teacher. One night before a competition, two best friends were rehearsing and one of them who would come second to the other, slashed her costume (now, they are JUST as expensive and as beautiful as solo dresses) because she was jealous. So the girl who had her dress slashed, ran home with her mum and they quickly made a new one. I think she ended up winning the competition.

I really think that this is not the norm for Irish dance, but it is way more common in other forms of competition. Truly, I can't believe how tight-knit, amicable, and safe Irish dance events are.

I watched a girl sitting behind another dancer who had a brand new solo dress and the girl behind her smashed her hardshoe into the new white fabric of that girl's dress. It was horrible and I went over and said "What are you doing?" and everything turned out ok. The girl's new dress wasn't wrecked too much.

Not at feiseanna but my local class has been terrrible with this stuff! Epi Pens were stolen from me...and a jacket that had my last name printed in the back neck. Shoes have been stolen, makeup, socks... bullying of other dancers... it's just terrible! People go behind friend's backs and take stuff and it never used to be like that. These are people who have known each other for 8 years +. It's crazy.
